Worms

Trout worms (European Nightcrawler)

Our Trout Worms are European Nightcrawlers which are a larger cousin of the Red Worm, and while certainly useful as a composting worm, is widely known for its potential as a bait worm.

Not only is it the perfect size – larger than a Red Worm, and smaller than a Canadian Nightcrawler (Lumbricus terrestris) – but it is also very durable, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions. I’ve not only read that these worms can even be used successfully in brackish waters and for ice fishing, I’ve had great success using these trout worms for winter ice fishing and for flounder fishing in the salt water.

Unlike Canadian Nightcrawlers (also known as ‘Dew Worms’), this species also does not need to be refrigerated during storage – although doing so may help to increase their shelf life even longer since it slows down their metabolism.

Research seems to indicate that European Nightcrawlers aren’t as prolific in the breeding department as Red Worms, nor are they as effective when it comes to processing organic wastes. Many worm farmers disagree – some indeed consider the Euro to be the “perfect” worm

Canadian Night Crawlers / Big Fish Bait

Dew worms or night crawlers (lumbricus terrestris) are common names for a species of earthworm that is active at night but also surface and crawl about during wet or rainy weather. They often leave casts on the surface which make lawns bumpy and uneven. Dew worms are more common on older, shaded or heavily watered lawns . These large worms are the preferred bait by many anglers targeting big fish. Almost all of the sturgeon caught on the Kennebecasis River in New Brunswick are hooked on big night crawlers. They are also popular bait for striped bass, lake trout and flounder. Our large night crawlers can stay alive and healthy in our prepackaged tubs for about 8 - 10 weeks if stored in a fridge around 36 - 38 degrees F.

Pure Earthworm Castings are an incredible organic fertilizer and soil conditioner that is of unsurpassed fertility. Because it has an abundance of readily available, non-burning nutrients, you add only a little in your plants. Earthworm castings go much farther and produce results that are simply far superior to those of conventional manures, compost or other organic fertilizers.

Try it once and you will see definite differences in the yield, size, health, and color of your vegetables, fruit, flowers, houseplants, lawns and more

Why Use Worm Castings (aka “Vermicompost”)?

  • Improve soil porocity and moisture capacity at the same time

  • Stimulate robust root growth and overall plant vigor

  • Provide your plants with both readily-available and “slow-release” nutrients

  • Add “life” to your soil in the form of a diverse ecosystem of beneficial microbes and micro-invertebrates

  • Help your plants resist/overcome attack from plant pathogens and pest organisms.

  • Will never burn/harm your plants or the soil ecosystem (unlike inorganic fertilizer salts)
